Introduction
Biocementation is a multidisciplinary research area bridging between science and technology which needs much exploration for conferring potential societal impact.
Research description
Series of bio-chemical reactions inside a microbial cell under certain conditions results in the extracellular precipitation of calcium carbonate, a biogeochemical process which is termed as Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) and it has been widely followed in environmental engineering for the last decade. This unique property of microbial cells have been recently utilized for restoration of old heritage buildings as well as in self healing of concrete cracks. Our lab has recently started working on this field and trying to achieve a sustainable alternative to conventional concrete repair techniques which contributes to much of the global CO2 emissions.
